This expansion is expected to increase sales and ensure a more consistent supply of shellfish seed and mature products. We estimate that once a new site is secured, it will take one year for the second facility to become operational.
Gourmet Ocean Products addresses the challenges in the BC shellfish market, such as limited species and supply inconsistencies, by providing a variety of species year-round in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. The market for shellfish is rapidly growing, with China’s demand for sea cucumber far exceeding the existing supply. Shellfish grown in BC waters command premium prices in Asia due to the purity of BC waters, positively impacting our profitability.
Our company was established in 2007, and after years of research, development, and collaboration with governmental and environmental organizations, we recognized the necessity for sustainable and environmentally friendly aquaculture.
We invested over $3 million in our shellfish hatchery expansion and production system on Vancouver Island, which included upgrades to enhance productivity and success rates. By securing the shellfish supply and working with shellfish tenure owners, we have developed a well-recognized brand known for quality and consistency.
